Title: GREENTECH: Re-Enforcing Smart Waste Recycling using Mobile Application Authors: Ma. Melanie Cruz and Thelma Palaoag
Country: Philippines
Abstract: In today’s modern society, we are facing one of the greatest environmental challenges especially in the waste recycling and disposal habits of all individuals. Every household has to remove contributed to the proliferation of waste especially plastics. Once used, plastics were just disposed of improperly. This environmental concern causes flood, air pollution, sickness, decreases the aesthetic value of the environment, and more. Despite numerous initiatives engaged to work out this issue, the production, as well as the growth of waste problems, have persisted to rise annually.
In the Philippines, solid waste generation in every municipality was considered the most determined environmental challenge. However, IT innovation in this generation unlocks the possibility for its several uses. The integration of the mobile application for environmental protection is a great opportunity.
However, with the different available mobile applications and studies concerning waste management, it was found out that there is still a need to conduct more studies that would focus on the individual level through the use of a mobile application. This led the researcher to develop a mobile application that will support solid waste management within the community. Also, the researcher aimed to investigate its adoption at the individual level to be a more responsible citizen and to be part of a solution in environmental and natural resources security issues in the country.
